From the Thracian earth, with the next generations in mind
Sgourdis Wines is a small, family-run estate established in 2000, when Panagiotis and Anastasia Sgouridis planted their first vineyard in Mandra Avdiron, in the Thrace region of northern Greece. The family has Asia Minor refugee roots and inherited a tradition of spirit distillation from grandfather Panagiotis. Their sons, Sgouris and Napoleon, are now actively involved in running the estate.
The vineyard covers 10 hectares of rolling hills alongside the Lafra and Lafrouда lagoons, which are protected under the international Ramsar Convention. The local microclimate is well-suited to viticulture: moisture from the lagoons protects the vine leaves during dry summer mornings, afternoon sea breezes flow parallel to the vine rows reducing humidity-related disease pressure, and a north-south orientation provides consistent sun exposure throughout the day. The suitability of this area for viticulture was recognised in antiquity, as evidenced by the winemaking history of Avdera.
The sandstone subsoil at shallow depth, combined with the undulating terrain and proximity to the sea, gives the wines a character tied to this specific place. All wines carry the Protected Geographical Indication of Avdera.
Organic farming has been practised at the estate since 2006, with certification covering both grapes and wines. A 20 kW on-site photovoltaic station and an electric vehicle contribute to reducing the estate's carbon footprint.
The vineyard is planted with indigenous Greek varieties — Mavroudi, Pamidi, Limnio, Assyrtiko, Muscat of Alexandria, Athiri, Roditis, Malagousia — alongside French varieties. The wines are organised into three ranges: Sigma, blends of Greek and French varieties; Mandrinos, single-varietal wines focused on indigenous grapes; and the Red Warrior (Erythros Polemistis), a red wine aged in oak barrels whose label is based on a Thracian warrior's armour found at the archaeological site of Avdira.
