The majestic red blend of central Macedonia

The majestic red blend of central Macedonia

The wine tradition of Goumenissa is deeply storied, with 19th-century records from 1892 praising the area for producing "excellent wine" that was widely exported. Located in the Kilkis region of Macedonia, the appellation is characterized by wave-like hills primarily situated at altitudes between 200 and 270 meters. The region gained significant international acclaim during World War I, when French troops stationed on the Macedonian Front took a particular liking to the robust local vintages. The terroir is defined by a sub-dry climate with the influence of cold northern Vardaris wind in winter and (mostly) southern sea breezes in summer that help temper the seasonal heat. Its complex soils, ranging from granitic rocks and schist to limestone, are rich in minerals and organic matter, allowing non-irrigated vines to flourish. Historically significant as the home of famous "black" tannic wines, the community remains culturally tied to viticulture through the annual celebration of Saint Tryphon, the patron saint of vine-growers.
